Job Description:

The Literacy Cooperative is currently seeking a Director for Early Literacy to provide strategic and operational leadership to initiatives that connect learning from birth to third grade. TLC demonstrates promising practices through a joint approach to address kindergarten readiness, third grade reading, and enhancing the roles of tutors and parents.  

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Early Literacy will work closely with and guide a wide array of stakeholders, develop plans for implementation, and track and report results.  The role requires experience in stakeholder engagement and project management, passion for early childhood development and education, as well as a commitment to improving the lives of Cleveland families in need.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Director will be responsible for the following duties in partnership and coordination with all stakeholders involved in the effort:

  • Coordinate a team of key stakeholders that will ultimately have authority to make decisions and take action on the work.
  • Prepare a highly detailed implementation work-plan outlining all initiatives and efforts supporting The Literacy Cooperative's Early Literacy goals, the stakeholders responsible for those efforts, and expected timelines. 
  • Work with The Literacy Cooperative Board of Directors to keep them abreast of initiative strategies and challenges.
  • Communicate regularly with early literacy stakeholders and workgroups to develop and revise initiatives, gather feedback on operations, and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Coordinate a process to develop a logic model and decide upon vision and results, leadership structure, stakeholder roles, and norms and culture.
  • Maintain communication tools such as databases and electronic listservs to ensure smooth flow of information and allow early literacy stakeholders to share learnings. 
  • Coordinate extensively with the Early Literacy evaluation team to monitor impact of initiatives and report to stakeholders all measures and progress.
  • Ensure the project reports (both narrative and financial reports) are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Assist with budgets and grant administration; including administration of programmatic sub-grants from funders.
  • Coordinate the design, planning and implementation of all early literacy-focused activities.
  • Maintain current information about local, regional, and national activities, related to Early Literacy strategies and areas of intersection with other priority areas.
  • Other duties related to The Literacy Cooperative's Early Literacy initiative as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in education, business, education, marketing or a related field.
  • Five + years of work experience and experience in leading and managing projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate and engage with a variety of stakeholders and external partners such as civic leaders, community organizations, and parents.
    • Experience or familiarity with strategic and tactical planning.
    • Knowledge of, and successful experience in, Cleveland or other urban communities.
  • Experience in self-managed initiatives with the ability to balance the demands related to multiple projects/deadlines.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with evidence-based practice (EBP) concepts and practice, preferred.
  • Experience or familiarity with the key strategic areas of Early Literacy goals to address third grade reading: Teacher Quality, Attendance, Kindergarten Readiness, and Summer Learning.
    • Master's degree in education, business, marketing or a related field.

  • Proficiency with computer software such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.
  • Participatory planning, monitoring, implementation and evaluation as well as budgeting.
  • Strong skills in project management and stakeholder engagement.
